Driftword Creative Services is a Christian Writing Ministry.

Our name and our logo are drawn from the fact that we write about the Word of God, and we imagine our writings - our words - drifting out into the world, as a message in a bottle drifts on the ocean.

Susan J. Hetrick is the founder of Driftword Creative Services and has been a freelance writer for more than twenty-five years.

She earned her B.A. in English Literature/Humanities from the University of Arizona in 1986, and her M.Div. in Counseling and Family Ministry from Phoenix Seminary in 2006.

She is the author of Advice From The Blender: What to know before you blend so nobody gets creamed (2007, Xulon Press), and is a sought-after speaker on such topics as blended families, discerning God's call in your life, and finding balance. She lives with her husband David and their four teenagers in Scottsdale, Arizona.

I am a Pencil -
My philosophy on being a writer.

When I first went to Seminary, everyone assumed I would end up in parish ministry. The theory is that when  someone goes to Seminary and earns an M.Div, they automatically become an ordained pastor and work in a church. My husband even said, “I don’t think I want to be a pastor’s wife!”

I graduated from Seminary in December 2006 and people still ask me, “Are you a pastor yet?” Sigh. No, I’m not a pastor. I don’t work in a church. God’s calling is about the gifts and talents He bestows, not the assumptions people make.

I am a writer. I have always been a writer. I attended Seminary because I knew that no matter what I wrote about, I wouldn’t be taken seriously without an education to back it up. God blessed me with the gift of writing, and called me to help build His kingdom with it. I listen for His direction, and He just keeps telling me to continue writing.

Mother Teresa said, “I am just a tiny pencil in the hand of a writing God, through whom He writes love letters to the world.”

Now when people ask if I am a pastor I tell them, “No, I am not a pastor. I am a pencil.”
